The joy of doing it spectacularly wrong

Hi there,

I notice it's a common habit among smart, magical people that they often keep themselves in a little bit of a rut of not trying new things...

.... in part because they're so intelligent and self-aware about their flaws and short-comings, and in part because they have vivid imaginations of "what might happen if I fail."

Personally, I have tons of (often contradictory) images in my head of what "doing it right" looks like -

- here's an example of what "doing it right" as a writer looks like in my brain:

1) waking at 5 am every day to hit my writing goals with hardcore Stephen Pressfield-esque, no-mercy, martial masculine precision

2) effortlessly having brilliance pour out of me in soaked waves of pure glittering effervescent inspiration while I lounge on pillows, a la Anais Nin

3) knowing what I'm going to say before I say it ;)

Pretty much none of that ever actually happens. And it's still ok. Writing still occurs. Life goes on.

All of which is to say:

... it's very normal and human to want to be safe and comfortable and confident in what we're doing...

... but there's also a paradox that whenever we're trying to do something ambitious, something we haven't tried before... that we just don't already know what we're doing... because we haven't done it yet!

I find that rather waiting for the perfect inspiration or confidence to strike, or waiting for me to ever match any image of what "doing it right" looks like --

-- it's much more useful for me to just start fumbling towards my goal, completely willing to fudge it up.

If something is worth doing - making a recipe, throwing a burlesque show, writing a book, growing a business -

- it's way better to just go ahead and do it all wrong rather than never doing it at all.

So if there's anything you want to do - a spell, a project, a change in the direction of your life -

- and you're hesitating because you notice that you're not confident that you'll "do it right" - I want to send you a hearty encouragement today...

... to go ahead and start doing it wrong. Way wrong. Spectacularly wrong! Publicly wrong!

Wrong it up all over the place! Look goofy. Lose face. All over. All the time. ;)

That's just how we learn. Getting really excellent at something is generally a rather messy, nonlinear process.

You might create something fantastic, all the while never once "doing it right."

So I invite you to go ahead and give yourself permission to be messy witch today ;)

best,

Carolyn
