Fellow Mages, Witches, keepers of the Great Work…

I, Matthew Merlin, come before you today with a story…as well as an invitation.

I. The Tale of Fire

I once told you a tale of the day I became a mage; I filled my hands with heat from the Sun and healed my now wife’s badly wounded knee with those celestial fires. For months afterward I marveled to the point of tears at the pulsating heat that flowed down my forearms during my morning practices.

“It’s all real,” the seven-year-old child in me wondered wide-eyed and grinning, as I slowly walked circles staring at the sky, “and it’s all right here, in the palms of my hands.” Butterflies landed on my shoulders, deer stood watching within arms reach, squirrels chattered at me in the branches above my head dropping leaves and wood chips.

“I’m a mage. I’ve really done it,” I laughed internally thinking of the years of shame and taunting I’d received for believing in magic in my Christian community. But I never stopped believing in it—in the actual transmutation of matter through one’s own connection to the life-force that pulsates throughout the universe, connecting all.

But it took meeting someone further on the path for me and dedicating myself to their tutelage to embody that belief and let it pour through me.

Since this first initiation in miracle-working, this embodiment has expanded to allow for the shifting of the realities of more than just me, my loved ones, and the local fauna.

II. The Tale of Sky

On a blustery, completely overcast November day, my teacher took me outside his home and had me stand barefoot in the snow without a jacket.

“Part the clouds,” He said with his ever present, Puck-like grin.

“The hell? Can you just do that?” I, said, trying to hide my almost painful desire for it to be true.

“You’re ready. And, besides, you already know how. Part the clouds. Call in the Sun,” he said with his hands in pockets in such a non-chalant manner it would have seemed more out of the ordinary for me NOT to fulfill his request.

I settled my breath. I intuitively moved my body into position, relaxed and immediately noticed how the energy and chi was already flowing in my body. I reached out with my hands, filled my hands, and let the celestial fires move me.

It happened slowly at first. My energy connected with the clouds, and a chill wind grew stronger and blew towards us.

After a couple seconds, the clouds opened up right above us. It started spreading further and further. In a few minutes, the thick blanket of white and gray clouds gave way to clear blue sky and the victorious Sun.

I parted the clouds. What started as dreams and fantasy grew into the ability to pull solar fire into my hands had now blossomed into what I could only call the miraculous. The workings of a true mage…let’s be honest….it’s some Gandalf/Ged-level shit.

I stood before an open sky, the Sun blazing upon me. I had changed the world with my own magical power. All of Pittsburgh got a little extra much needed sunlight after nearly a week of grey days.

I am here to invite you into a lineage of the very real transmutation of matter, the miraculous thaumaturgy of ancient adepts and masters of the classical world.

Healing the sick. Turning water into wine. Parting the clouds. This is the work of those who have truly committed themselves to the life of magic.

Now nothing is more important to me than letting the world know this is possible, than showing other aspirant mages that this power lives in them too. You can work wonders. You will make this world a more beautiful place…by owning who you are and where you come from.

Could I have parted the clouds without my teacher standing next to me? Hell no.

This is why I offer myself up as a teacher to you now in the same capacity. Together, I believe we can build a heaven on earth. To do so we must take up our cosmic scepters and staves of divine godhood. Together we can manifest paradise.
