on choosing to be a legend
Hello,
If you feel like you don’t truly know who you are, as if you’re a mish-mash of emotion just pretending to be “a real person”...
... the good news is: you get to decide.
You, and only you, get to decide who you are and what your experience *means*.
This is the burden AND the gift of our essential divinity; this is the painful and glorious fact of magic.
It’s painful because the full weight of the choice is on you - you can decide to pretend like the choice of who you are and what you mean was already made for you already somehow... but even that... is a choice :)
Sadly, most people make this not-so-great choice to wait for their identity to be handed to them by friends, family, colleagues.
Here’s my suggestion: don’t do that.
Instead, choose to be a legend.
Liz Taylor as Cleopatra from the eponymous 1963 film.
What does it take to be a legend? Well, you just have to show up for your mission in life with a determination, splendor, and intensity that’s so inspiring other people decide to tell children about you.
Yes, children - because a legend is passed down through generations, that’s what makes it different than a trend.
Legends don’t have spotless resumes and sin-free lives... what they have is a decision to embody their fullest power and mission no matter what.
Cleopatra decided it was her mission to keep sacred Egypt in power up against the threat of a rising Roman navy.
She fulfilled her mission so well that imperial Roman soldiers shuddered with dread for generations after at the very sound of her name.
What choices are you now making about your identity, your meaning, your purpose?
best,
Carolyn
